All mammals are susceptible to having gas, and dogs are no exception. This typically becomes more of a problem for the owner than the dog. Yet, many owners can attest that it can be quite an annoyance. While some breeds are more susceptible to getting gas, there are things that can be done to reduce the problem. First feeding a good quality food helps. Second, don’t feed a dog table scraps. Often these foods are hard for a dog to digest and result in gas. High protein treats and foods such as rawhide chews can create particularly bad odors. Finally dairy, for some animals, is hard to digest and can also cause gas. Flatulence can also be treated with over-the-counter remedies. Typically these treatments either use charcoal to reduce odors, or use digestive enzymes to help aid in better digestion which results in less gas. While in most cases gas is just an annoyance and not harmful, if a dog shows signs of bloat of discomfort a vet should be contacted.
