During the hot summer weather it is important to ensure that pets stay cool. Overheating and heat stoke are very serious problems for pets. There are a few things to keep in mind to help a pet stay cool and healthy in the intense heat. Water is of the utmost importance in hot weather. Making sure a pet can access water is vital as it is the most basic way to stay cool and hydrated, and the potential for dehydration increases in hot weather. Providing an extra water dish or water source is wise as a pet may either run out, or dogs in particular, are prone to tipping their dish over. Automatic or continuous flow water dishes can be particularly helpful for pets that spend extended periods of time outdoors. Next, provide a cool spot out of the sun for your pet. Also, be aware of spots that can become extremely hot such as cars, sunrooms, garages, and attics, and take precautions to ensure a pet doesn’t become trapped in any of these areas. Don’t over exercise a pet either. Finally, seek immediate veterinary attention if your pet is showing any sign of heat stroke as this is an extremely dangerous condition.
