GROOMING

Grooming needs differ depending on the type and breed of animal. However, all pets require some grooming. One of the most common grooming concerns is shedding. With the warmer months approaching, most pets will be shedding their winter coats. Thick coated pets typically need regular grooming year round to help prevent matted fur, which can be uncomfortable and sometimes result in skin problems. For pets, such as Golden Retrievers, that have thick or heavy coats frequent brushing is one of the best ways to limit the amount of fur shed around the home. There are a variety of grooming tools to help with particular pets and fur types. There are shedding rakes, slickers, and blades all which help remove dead or excess fur. Flea combs are used both for finding fleas and parasites as well as a regular grooming tool for fine coated pets. Dematting combs or mat splitters can be helpful for removing mats in the fur. Pin brushes are used in routine grooming for dogs with a variety of fur types. Stripping combs are best suited for terriers with wire coats. Indoor cats, and others, need nails trimmed routinely too. Groomers or vets may perform this service for you, but some pets will need additional trimming, which make pet nail trimmers extremely useful.

CHRONIC CHEWERS

Dogs that are chronic or destructive chewers can be a big problem. Chewing is almost always a problem when puppies are teething, but can also be a moderate to severe problem for adult dogs. For very destructive chewers the source of this problem frequently stems from a dog’s need for more attention or exercise. These dogs redirect their energy into chewing or other bad habits. Dogs often find a variety of inappropriate items to chew, making this a frustrating problem. Whether the problem is mild or severe, or whether dealing with a puppy or adult dog, there are ways to help correct this behavior. First, if destructive chewing is caused by not receiving enough attention or exercise addressing this problem is needed. Most dogs will act out in some way until this situation is remedied as it is one of their basic needs. Next is to redirect chewing to appropriate items. Many dogs will always chew to some extent, and puppies in particular will need something that they are allowed to and encouraged to chew. A good durable chew toy works. Finally, there are products that can be used to deter dogs (and even cats) from chewing inappropriate items such as furniture, shoes, or most any other forbidden item. Products like Bitter Apple or Bitter Lime repel pets through bad taste. Protecting valued items and training a dog to know what is appropriate to chew and what is not can remedy this problem.
