PET BEDS
There are numerous options when choosing a bed for your pet. The style of bed your pet prefers can vary greatly from animal to animal. In making a selection, consider the size and nature as well as the placement of the bed to best suit the needs of the pet and owner. Age is a factor that gives rise to specialty beds which often focus on the needs of ‘senior’ pets. For senior dogs, muscle and joint problems are common and certain beds are designed especially to suit these pets. Typically these beds help reduce pressure on the joints. They can use either special supported foam, or be raised to eliminate pressure from the floor. Both help sore muscles and joints which can lead to better sleep and less stiffness when awakened. Heated pet beds, or beds specifically designed to retain warmth are also a favorite for older pets that can be more susceptible to becoming chilled than a younger animal, and heat can help soothe soreness too. Also these beds are helpful for pets that either sleep in a drafty location or on a concrete floor that can become cold during the winter months. Conversely cooling beds are good for pets in warm weather particularly if they are overweight or have thick coats as they can have a tough time cooling down. Cats frequently prefer beds that they curl up inside of. Baskets, enclosed or semi-enclosed beds are a fairly safe choice for most cats. They can also be a good choice for some dogs. Typically they are made with smaller dogs and cats in mind. Then there are beds that are convenient for the owner. Some beds are simply intended as protection for your furniture. A pet may already have a favorite spot on a couch or chair picked out and a pet throw or blanket style bed is a good way of simply keeping fur and/or claws off that piece of furniture. Also, if your pet travels with you some beds are easier to take along on the trip. Beds that are specifically intended for crates and carriers make this process easier and are typically useful as both a home and away bed. Other factors can also be important.
